History

In early 1953 a community tent revival was held at the corner of Highway 70
and Bethel Church Rd. (now called Knox Rd.) The revival was so wonderful
that those attending decided to start a new church. One half of an old army
hospital barrack was purchased for $1,400 from the ORD (Overseas
Replacement Depot in Greensboro, NC) and was relocated to 5928 Bethel
Church Rd. The new church members sacrificed time and money converting
the old barrack into the first church building. This church building still exists.
Can you believe the payments for this first church were only $54/month and
the Pastor was paid just between $3 and $5 a week? A church reorganization
occurred on October 17, 1953. The congregation voted to pull out of the
Baptist organization, and chose to become part of the Pentecostal Holiness
denomination. The new church was first referred to as Gospel Tabernacle. By
the time the church registered with the Western North Carolina Pentecostal
Holiness Conference they had changed the name to Twin Oaks Pentecostal
Holiness Church. Later, under the leadership of Pastor Tommy Scronce, the
name was shortened to what it is today. Twin Oaks Church experienced growth
both in numbers, power and strength through the baptism of the Holy Spirit in
the late 60’s through the early 70’s. In the 80’s, the church undertook it’s
second great task and leap of faith as, under Pastor Charles Webb, a new
sanctuary and fellowship hall was built. It was evident that God could accomplish
great things when His people pulled together in sacrifice and faith!
Following Pastor Webb, the congregation continued to be served by other Godly
men. During these years, there were many victories, but there also were exceedingly
great trials. None the less, God remained faithful! In 1994, God led a young minister
named Tommy Scronce to pastor Twin Oaks Church. Early in his pastorate, Pastor
Scronce was given a Vision of things to come for this church. This included a
multi-purpose building, Child Development Center and a new sanctuary. Because
of the phenomenal growth, it was necessary for Twin Oaks Church to relocate.
Therefore, the original property was sold to Lighthouse Baptist Church in 2004.
Soon after, Twin Oaks moved to 5935 Burlington Rd. (This is the same place where
the first tent meeting was held 50 years before.) At long last the Vision was coming
to pass! Today, the Child Development Center is thriving and and the multi-purpose
building is used for worship, fellowship and other community-related events.
Twin Oaks Church is again experiencing a phenomenal move of the Holy Spirit,
and there are great things which lay ahead! A new sanctuary and other future
expansions are already in the planning stages and will soon be a part of the
Twin Oaks campus. The Vision for Twin Oaks Church has also led to the
purchase of additional land to make room for new ministries.
As God's Spirit continues to burn brightly in Pastor Tommy, his soul’s desire
is to follow the voice of the Lord and lead in the direction that God has ordained.
